The best beaches for families in the Maremma
"La Maremma", the region in the extreme south of Tuscany, with a coastline of more than 130 km from San Vincenzo to Capalbio, spoils its guests with many beaches, each with its own character.
I want to show you the best beaches for families today.
Children's paradise with international guests
The beach section "
Torre Mozza" is located just outside of Follonica. It’s just 50 m from the parking lot to the beach and the day at the sea can begin, so the family-friendly Torre Mozza is the right choice, especially if you have all your favorite toys with you, from rubber duck, snorkeling gear to rubber boat, and daddy has to push the overloaded handcart to the sea. Many international families bustle here, so that the children can quickly get to know new people. Guests like this beach because there are short distances and the water is super clear. My advice If you are looking for accommodation near the sea and with beach access, I would highly recommend La Madonnina Resort. It is run by two guys from Como who are real service heroes. The price-performance ratio is unbeatable. And the " Sunny Hill Bar" with a wonderful view of the sea has been around for two years. If grandma and grandpa take care of the children in the evening, I recommend a romantic evening in the restaurant of the Relais Torre Mozza, a former watchtower that has been extensively transformed into a boutique hotel with a small and fine restaurant. The owner Nicolò is a good friend of mine and graduated from hotel management school in Switzerland. We tried the fish "alla griglia", I highly recommend it. For all of you who are looking for absolute peace and want to enjoy a wonderful view of the valley, I can recommend the "Sequerciani" of a friend of mine, a Swiss director, very close to Tatti, just 15 minutes from the sea.
For me, the Maremma National Park symbolizes the
quintessence of Maremma. Natural, somewhat rough and ruged, original, pure, wide. You can really breathe here, there is space here. In addition to the various nature trails that can be explored with the whole family, Alberese also includes a long beach. Access is limited, so it is advisable to arrive early in order to get one of the coveted places. Passing the wide meadows, the horses and the typical Maremma cattle, suddenly the wonderful view of the sea opens up with a view of Argentario and the island of Giglio. My advice All horse lovers should definitely take a ride to the sea with the Maremma horses. An incomparable experience where you can feel intensely the closeness to nature. Nearby, my friend, architect Luca, has one of the best agriturisms in the area with a pool - great fun for young and old. He is not only a good architect but also a passionate host and knows the area like the back of his hand.
La Feniglia & La Gianella
Bathing in the nature reserve
There are basically only two sandy beaches on the Argentario peninsula, "
La Feniglia" and "La Gianella", all the others are rocky and generally more difficult to access. La Feniglia, just before Porto Ercole, borders on a nature reserve and is characterized by the shallow beach that families like here. So ideal for small children and carefree parents. Here you can walk far into the water without having to swim. La Gianella, on the other hand, which connects the mainland with the peninsula, is characterized by the finest sandy beach, many lido and excellent restaurants. My favorite is the "Il Tramonto". In addition to the freshly caught fish, there is also a children's playground, so the little ones can let off steam and the parents can relax in peace. My advice If you want to spend the day at Feniglia, it is advisable to reserve a parking space in good time, as space is limited and demand is high in high season. For those who are looking for very special accommodation with breathtaking sea views on a travel budget allows it, you should definitely check in with my friend Stefania in the Boutique Hotel "Torre di Cala Piccola" . Breathtaking views of the sea and the island of Giglio are guaranteed here. For all golfers among you there is the most challenging course of all 4 in Porto Ercole - besides Saturnia, Il Pelagone, Punta Ala - in the area.
Golden sandy beach
Le Rocchette, named after the castle of the same name, which still sits on its ledge today, is
located south of Punta Ala and very close to Castiglione della Pescaia. At the very end of the beach, to the north there are many rocks, an Eldorado for snorkelers and divers. The fine sandy beach has a yellowish color and is therefore often referred to as the gold of Castiglione. Here free beach sections alternate with beach clubs, where you can rent loungers. So there is always a restaurant or bar within easy reach. Many guests report that they saw the most beautiful sunsets here. My advice I experienced the best aperitif, the best music and the best position for photographing the sunset at the “Skipper Beach Club” in Castiglione della Pescaia. There is also a restaurant with a 180 degree view of the sea, simply fantastic. If you are looking for accommodation near the sea, the Roccamare of my friend Robi Veltroni is the best recommendation. Guests love the spaciousness of the resort, in the middle of the pine grove and the short distance to the sea. If you like something a little more secluded and luxurious, with my friend Vito at L'Andana you’re in the best hands. Guests especially like the childcare, the SPA and the resort's own driving range.
Attention all water sports fans
There is only one way in and out to Punta Ala. The headland is about a 10-minute drive north of Castiglione della Pescaia and is characterized by the
extensive pine forests that provide soothing shade in summer. The most important sandy beach is on the north side and runs gently into the water. Ideal for families with young children. Punta Ala is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts, whether sailing, windsurfing or stand up paddling. You are exactly right here My advice The best hotel in town is the Gallia Palace. Guests love the well-tended gardens around the pool. If you come to Punta Ala, you should definitely plan a day trip by boat. Both sailboats and motor yachts can be rented in the harbor. Contact my friend Mario.
MARINA DI GROSSETO
Widest beaches in the whole of Maremma
Marina di Grosseto has the
widest beaches in all of Maremma. If you are looking for a lot of space, this is the place for you. The promenade is lined with numerous beach clubs. My personal favorite is the "Gabbiano" near the port, because in addition to the good service, it shows great taste and aesthetics in the decor. My advice Be sure to try windsurfing or kiting. The surf scene meets in the Moreno Beach Club or on Fiumara Beach. There is no better place to try the sport, the intoxicating feeling of being carried by the wind. My friend Luca runs one of the largest campsites in Europe. The "Cielo Verde" is the best choice for you if you are looking for accommodation in the green, want a swimming pool nearby and appreciate the proximity to the sea.
In the valley of the sun
On Elba, each beach is more beautiful than the other. The Biodola is located near Portoferraio and can therefore be
reached quickly. The special location of the bay, framed by hills and mountains, makes it particularly sheltered from the wind and gives it the feel of a protected nest. The water is crystal clear and the sand is golden yellow. A quiet place - ideal for the whole family. A special feature are the waves that arrive here when the ferries arrive in Porteferraio. Therefore position your towels far away enough from the water, otherwise they will take to the sea with the next wave. My advice If the travel budget allows it, I recommend the Hotel Hermitage. One of the most traditional and best hotel operations on the island. If you are looking for more entertainment in the evening, the Marina Garden Hotel is the better choice. For fresh fish at lunchtime, be sure to book at "I due Pini". Magnificent view of the sea and great value for money.
The island of Giglio is much smaller than Elba. In terms of the beauty of the
beaches, the two islands are on the same level. One is more beautiful than the other. From Porto Santo Stefano you can reach the island of Giglio in about 1 hour. There is a parking space for your car opposite the ferry port. You can park here on a daily basis. The ticket office is right next door if you have not already booked online. The sandy beach north of the port on Giglio is particularly convenient for families because it can be reached quickly and the beach runs gently into the water. It is only approx. 150 m on foot, past the small shops and the numerous restaurants and bars, and you are already there. The beach is free to use, so you should bring everything you need for a day at the beach. There are several “alimentari” on the promenade, where you can buy drinks and snaks in between. My Advise The “La Guardia” was opened directly on the beach last year by the innovative hotel operator GreyRock, after it has been extensively renovated over the past two years. Today it is presented in a maritime style and is aimed primarily at a young, international clientel. The best place for a longer stay on the island of Giglio. From the hotel you can easily walk to both the harbor and the promenade. To explore the most beautiful beaches on the island, it is advisable to rent a boat. For dinner I regularly go to the Doria, right by the sea, because the service here is just great.
If the sun takes a day off, it is advisable to explore the interior and relax in the Terme. The Terme di Saturnia has the highest flow of thermal water in Italy at 500 liters per second. The therapeutic effect is the best here.
In the evening, the best way to end the day is in the restaurant “I due Cippi”. The best restaurant far and wide when it comes to grilled meat. Even the entrance is like a staged play. From the showcase with meat from all over the world, the open fireplace, in which the steak of your choice is prepared, to your own table for this evening, everything has been thought of. The ambience is as simple as the menu.
